Anyway, this peice is meant to be a symbolic representation of the two forces, fire and water, in conflict with eachother. It appears that Lao is bringing the water, but it is actually the other way around: Lao is drowning in the element of water, and is using fire to evapourate the water and free himself.
Both of Lao's parents, for example, have died in water-related incidents (mother drowning herself, and father drinking water poisoned by his mother).
Lao will always attempt to change the world, even if that means burning it or destroying it, because the static fashions of life do not appeal to him. He likes change and manipulation. When there is peace, he wants war.
